Planning

A TREATMENT FOR 'SPLIT'
Prepared by Luci Crawford
6/30/2020

It is proposed that this film will be of 2 to 2.5 minutes duration and it will be filmed at 794 East Coast Road because it is a large place with several places to film, and we can easily clean up our fake blood off the floor and not get in anyones way:

City Impact Church North Shore - City Impact Church

This film will include the following conventions of a thriller films:
1. Night Terrors. They are something most people experience and no one in the audience would enjoy so would become uncomfortable while they are watching it. The character Ebony will be thrashing around and we will show her disturbing dreams so the audience knows what she is thinking of.
Sleep paralysis: What is it, and how can you cope with it?
2. Mental Illness. Film has presented people who have mental illnesses as scary and dangerous. This has been portrayed through the years by the use of some very famous thriller movies such as Psycho ( Alfred Hitchcock, 1960), Secret Window (David Koepp, 2004), and Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese, 2010). By the use of having our main character pale and eccentric and almost wild, living on a mattress in a dark room, it will show that she's unstable and can't cope properly.

3. Mask. The killer in our film before her identity is revealed will be wearing a white mask. This intimidates the audience as the identity is hidden and so makes them feel vulnerable. No emotion can be shown through a mask which is why most people feel nervous about it. It also helps hide her identity so that there is s shock when she removes it. The mask is white to represent the true purity inside Ebony, it's not her that wants to kill people but the different personality inside her.

4. Blood. Blood is a commonly used convention in thrillers as it shows death. When we kill the doctor, we can do a sot focusing on the dripping blood which makes the audience uncomfortable. Red is also a harsh colour that represents pain, and by stabbing the doctor it shows that this side of Ebony is ruthless and not afraid of people who are bigger than her.

5. Abandonment. Ebony will be shown in her room which is dark and has only a mattress and a few random items. We had this idea based off of The Mentalist as it was a convention they used to show Patrick Jayne was mentally unstable and not in a good place. We want to show that Ebony is mentally ill and has either no family or has left her family.

6.Knives. Knives are violent and are used in thrillers to injure and kill. The kitchen knife that we will use will also show that Ebonies second side wants to inflict pain on the doctor that can't help her. It  also shows the danger that the doctor is in.

7. Scrubs. Scrubs will help us to show that it is part medical thriller, In thrillers, doctors are often shown as the bad guys as they can't diagnose, won't diagnose, or diagnose incorrectly. They have also been shown to kill people on purpose i several different medical thrillers.

After watching these thriller films I have been influenced by these openings and conventions:

Gone Girl:  Begins with the main male character doing a voice over with unstable, violent words in a creepily calm tone that matches the calm around him. Our's wont have a calm opening scene, but the voice over added a scary feel that we could mimic while Ebony runs.

Shutter Island: Close ups on Leonardo DiCaprios face show he is stressed and sick.  His eyes are red as he looks in the camera which adds a creepy feel.

Problems encountered:
The fake blood stained so we needed to get a shirt that could be practically ruined and we had to wait for Levi's brother to bring one.
Stethiscopes are expensive so also had to borrow one from Tyson and we couldn't get any blood on it or drop it.
